Taunggyi
The capital of Shan State is situated 1433 metres above sea level. It was
also a former British hill station. It has a cool climate year round. The
weekly market is a good place to see some of the ethnic minorities. From
here one can travel to other scenic hill station such as Kalaw and to the
Pindaya caves filled with ancient Budha images.
Inle Lake : Inle
Lake is loated about 30km to the south of Taunggyi and 853 metres above
sea level. Inle Lake offers an unforgettable pastiche of unique
experiences. A motorised long-boat trip across the lake to see the famous
leg-rowers, floating villages and colorful markets are one opportunity not
to be missed. The leg rowers are usually fishermen at work with their
artistically made cone-shaped nets.
Kalaw : The favourite of the old British hill
stations, is situated at about 71km west of Taunggyi. A picturesque
village surrouned by pine forests, it features some of Myanmar’s most
beautiful gardens.
Pindaya : About
45 km north of Kalaw is Pindaya. The caves at Pindaya are in a limestone
ridge overlooking a lake and full of thousand of carved Buddha images,
some carved in the face of the rock and some depostied in niches in the
walls. The road from Kalaw to Pindaya is breath-taking in many ways, with
panoramic mountain views, reminiscent of the Alps in Europe.
